"We do not detach ourselves from things in order to attach ourselves to God, but rather we become detached from ourselves in order to see and use all things in and for God."

I thought this quote flowed nicely following Mike's 'Church:Community' post.

I believe the church has wrongly assumed that in order to be close to God they must separate themselves from the people and the things of the world. But I believe we must separate us from ourselves, our consumerist mindset, our selfishness and instead, do all things for the glory of God. Not distancing ourselves from the 'world,' but rather closing the gap with them.

Tomorrow's church has to learn to live life with people again. The church needs to talk about what matters most with people and talk with them about seemingly meaningless things like sports and their interests. We need to reengage them, reconnect them with the truth that has set us free. Free from ourselves.

Kevin, I like what you say here:
"We need to re-engage..."
I think that there are so many people who are unaware of what the Church is. They do not understand how to "participate" as a member of the body, because the Church has often given a false impression of what it looks like to be a follower. We most certainly need to reconnect people with the Church. It is not so much an "invitation" to join the Church, but rather encouragement to participate in a community that we have been given the privilege to be a part of since the cross. We "invite" people to claim what is already theirs. Freedom in Christ.
We must learn how to connect with people in a way that is relevant. It seems like someone has already demonstrated this concept...hmm....perhaps...Jesus Christ? :) He certainly didn't speak in parables to make it easier for him to understand....
